Which door size should I choose for my dog or cat?
For cats, choosing the right size is easy. The petWALK door in "Medium" size fits all cats. From the smallest to the XXL specimens, the Medium size works perfectly for cats. What might still be interesting to test for cats in advance: the installation height. However, for this, you don't even need to order the petWALK cat door in the first step; instead, you can cut a 20 x 30 cm hole in a piece of cardboard that you can wedge into a door frame between two rooms. Roughly calculate the planned installation height (e.g., from the floor to the bottom edge of the planned glass cutout in the balcony door) and add 10 cm. Then, attach the cardboard cutout at the calculated height. If your pets have difficulty going through the cutout at the calculated height, a different (lower) installation location must be chosen to make the best possible use of all petWALK door functions (especially motion detection and RFID recognition).

For dogs, choosing the correct size is important. Size Large with a pass-through opening of 30 x 50 cm and size Medium with 20 x 30 cm are available. If you are unsure about the size, you can also create a cardboard cutout as described above. Generally, dogs up to a shoulder height of approx. 50 cm can use the Medium door. Whether this works in practice, of course, largely depends on how muscular the shoulders are. For a muscular dog, it is advisable to test the petWALK door beforehand. We explain exactly how this works below.

How does the RFID recognition of my cat/dog work?
If RFID recognition is an important purchasing criterion for the petWALK pet door, you should thoroughly test this function. The petWALK door primarily detects motion; RFID recognition can be activated additionally if needed. Since there are many factors that influence RFID recognition, it's better to test it with your pets beforehand. The RFID collar tags offered in our shop work at a distance of approx. 15-20 cm, depending on the size of the tag.
If you want to use the petWALK pet door with implanted chips, you should definitely test this before installing the door. Due to the extremely small size of these chips and their implantation in the animal, the performance of these chips is very low, so the function of the petWALK pet door with implanted chips cannot be guaranteed in practical operation. However, for many customers, the implanted chips work satisfactorily, especially for cats. If the implanted chips are recognized, you can expect a range of up to 5 cm.
There are some tips on how to optimally use the RFID detection range. If you have any questions or are currently testing the function at home, please feel free to call us. You can find an overview of RFID here.
Experience the Difference!
The petWALK door is a full-fledged door and functions entirely differently from a flap. The true extent of the difference between a door and a flap is difficult to grasp from descriptions and pictures alone. Some things simply need to be tried out to be understood.
If you have questions such as... Will my anxious cat accept the door? Can my sick dog comfortably walk through it? How loud is the door when it opens/closes? How stable is it?... then it's best to order a petWALK to your home and train the process in the test setup as often as you and your pet like. In case it doesn't work out, the door simply comes back to us within 14 days of delivery.
But let's be honest, your pets will never want to give up their petWALK door again!
Using the petWALK packaging as a test station
Before installing the petWALK pet door into the building structure, test it beforehand at the location where it will later be installed. To simplify testing, you can convert the packaging into a provisional test station with a few simple steps.
