Battery Replacement: How to Replace the Battery in Your petWALK Pet Door

The petWALK pet door has an integrated emergency power battery so that your pet can safely return home even in the event of a power outage. Like any battery, the rechargeable battery also has a limited lifespan. In this section, you will find out whether a battery replacement is necessary and how you can do it if required.

Here you can find the instructions for battery replacement

A battery lasts about as long as a car battery with normal use. A regular glance at the display ensures that your pet is never left in front of a locked door, even in the event of unexpected power interruptions. Our technical support will be happy to help you interpret error messages correctly and find the best solution for your pet door.

When is a battery replacement necessary?

Before you begin the replacement, we recommend a quick check: a flashing operating mode does not always mean a defect – often the battery is simply recharging after a power outage.

  • Temporary flashing: After a power outage, the battery recharges itself. If the flashing stops within a week, everything is fine.
  • Permanent flashing / “LOAd”: If the display remains on for several days, the battery is either deeply discharged or defective.
  • Important note: The "LOAd" display also appears if the battery plug is not firmly inserted. Please check this beforehand.

Replacing the petWALK battery: How to tell when a replacement is needed

Identify battery type

Depending on the age of your petWALK pet door, different battery types are installed. Knowing this is important, as older models absolutely require a functioning battery for operation.

AMP battery (models before 06/2014)

  • Distinguishing feature: The plug is not directly visible.
  • Special feature: These models cannot be operated without a functioning battery. A replacement is essential here for the basic function of the door.

JST battery (models after 06/2014)

  • Distinguishing feature: The plug is visible (to the left or right of the door leaf, depending on the hinge).
  • Special feature: The pet door generally also works without a battery when connected to the mains. However, the JST battery is required to automatically switch to emergency power mode in the event of a power outage.
