When temperatures drop and winter approaches, we all want to be warm and cozy – including our beloved pets. But extensive heating can quickly become expensive. However, with a few clever tricks and the right equipment, you can save on heating costs and still enjoy a comfortable warmth in your home. Here's how to achieve it.
1. Smart Heat Retention with petWALK
Normal cat flaps allow a lot of heat to escape. petWALK, on the other hand, offers a pet door that not only allows your pet to enter and exit safely but also provides excellent insulation. This keeps the heat inside and reduces heating costs. Use our configurator to find the perfect pet door for your home!
2. There's No Place Like Home
Cooking generates heat that you can use to warm your home. After baking, leave the oven door open so that the warm air flows into the room. This way, you save twice: on heating and on restaurant visits.
3. Choose the Right Room Temperature
Not every room needs to be equally warm. The following temperatures are recommended:
- Living room: 20 °C
- Bedroom: 17 °C
- Kitchen: 18 °C
- Children's room: 22 °C
With every degree less, you save around 6% on heating costs!
4. Ventilate Correctly
Instead of leaving windows continuously tilted, you should air out the room several times a day by opening the windows wide for a few minutes. This efficiently exchanges the air without cooling down the walls.
5. Use Curtains and Blinds
Close curtains and blinds at night to keep the heat in the room. Curtains act as insulation and prevent heat loss – and curious glances at the same time!
6. Keep Radiators Clear
Make sure your radiators are not covered by furniture or curtains. Clear radiators can distribute heat better throughout the room.
7. Utilize Solar Heat
Take advantage of sunny days, even in winter, to heat rooms. Open the curtains and let the sun in. This saves heating costs and boosts your mood.
8. Dress Warmly
Before turning up the heating, put on a warm sweater and socks. This sounds simple but can save a lot of energy. Our animals show us the way – they wear their warming fur all year round.
9. Use a Central Thermostat
If you have a central thermostat, set it directly to your desired temperature. Start with a lower setting and slowly increase it until you find your comfortable temperature.
10. Turn Down Heating When Absent
When you are not home, lower the temperature. For short absences, 15 °C is sufficient; for longer absences, you can turn it down even further. Programmable thermostats are particularly practical here.
11. Bleed Radiators
If your radiators gurgle, there is air in the system. Bleed the radiators to increase efficiency and reduce energy consumption. This is easily done with a bleeding key.
With these tips and tricks, you can reduce your heating costs and at the same time ensure a warm home – for yourself and your pets. Use the petWALK Configurator to find your ideal pet door and save even more energy.
