When temperatures drop and winter approaches, we all want to be warm and cozy—including our beloved pets. However, heating can quickly become expensive. With a few clever tricks and the right equipment, you can save on heating costs while still enjoying cozy warmth in your home. Here’s how you can do it.
-
Store Heat with petWALK Smartly
Standard cat flaps allow a lot of heat to escape. petWALK, on the other hand, offers a pet door that not only lets your pet in and out safely but also provides excellent insulation. This keeps the heat inside and reduces heating costs. Use our configurator to find the perfect pet door for your home! -
Your Own Stove is Worth Its Weight in Gold
Cooking generates heat that you can use to warm your home. After baking, leave the oven door open so that the warm air flows into the room. This way, you save twice: on heating and dining out! -
Choose the Right Room Temperature
Not every room needs to be the same temperature. The following temperatures are recommended:- Living Room: 20 °C
- Bedroom: 17 °C
- Kitchen: 18 °C
- Children's Room: 22 °C
For every degree lower you set, you save around 6% on heating costs!
-
Ventilate Properly
Instead of leaving the windows permanently ajar, ventilate several times a day. Open the windows wide for a few minutes to efficiently exchange the air without cooling down the walls. -
Use Curtains and Blinds
Close curtains and blinds at night to keep the heat in the room. Curtains have an insulating effect and help prevent heat loss—while also keeping prying eyes out! -
Keep Radiators Clear
Ensure your radiators are not covered by furniture or curtains. Unobstructed radiators can distribute heat more effectively throughout the room. -
Utilize Solar Heat
Take advantage of sunny days, even in winter, to warm your rooms. Open the curtains and let the sun in. This saves on heating costs and lifts your mood. -
Dress Warmly
Before turning up the heat, put on a warm sweater and socks. It sounds simple, but it can save a lot of energy. Our pets show us how to do this—they wear their warm fur all year round! -
Use a Central Thermostat
If you have a central thermostat, set it directly to your desired temperature. Start with a low setting and gradually adjust it until you find your comfortable level. -
Turn Down the Heating When You’re Away
If you’re not home, lower the temperature. For short absences, 15 °C is sufficient, but if you’ll be away for an extended period, you can set it even lower. Programmable thermostats are particularly useful in this case. -
Bleed the Radiator
If your radiators are gurgling, there’s air in the system. Bleed the radiators to improve efficiency and reduce energy consumption. This is easy to do with a bleed key.
With these tips and tricks, you can reduce your heating costs while ensuring a warm home—for you and your pets. Use the petWALK configurator to find your ideal pet door and save even more energy.
